Academics & Programs

We use Eureka Math Squared curriculum, which focuses on strong concept development to prepare students for real world math challenges. Teachers incorporate strategies to acquire academic vocabulary related to math, in order to express their thinking.

Our EL curriculum incorporates strong phonics instruction at each student's level, while emphasizing increasing academic vocabulary and comprehension of complex text. Glenview will also be using UFLI for developing student foundational literacy skills with all lower grade students, and SIPPS as a foundational intervention program.

Teachers utilize EL Education learning modules for reading and writing.  School wide, there has been great emphasis on developing writing skills. We also utilize an online reading program, iReady which is adaptive to the learning needs of each individual student. 

We use NGSS FOSS (Full Option Science System) science curriculum. FOSS is focused on inquiry-based learning, hands-on learning and active investigation, group work, engineering, and ELA integration.

At Glenview, we take a whole-child approach to education. That means we focus on social-emotional learning as well as academics. Social-emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

• For a growing number of schools and districts, SEL has become a coordinating framework for how educators, families, and communities partner to promote students’ social, emotional, and academic learning.
• SEL is embedded in their strategic plans, staffing, professional learning, and budgets. It guides their curriculum choices and classroom instruction -- both direct practice in SEL as well as integrated instruction with reading, math, history, and other core subjects.
• It drives many of their schoolwide practices and policies.
• It shapes their partnerships with families and community members, highlighting engagement, trust, and collaboration.

Curricula and programs we utilize as part of our SEL approach includes Caring School Communities, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), The Toolbox Project, and Healthy Oakland Kids

Glenview has won the bronze PBIS Implementation Award from the California PBIS Coalition for its implementation of positive behavioral intervention and supports. Go Griffins!

Makerspace is a weekly arts class for all grades focused on building and creating with unusual supplies and imaginative thinking, and incorporating sustainable art and engineering by using recycled and upcycled materials. 

PE is a weekly class for all grades that focuses on healthy play and collaboration.

Our part-time school librarian, Leigh Carroll, is supported by parent volunteers. Children make weekly visits with their classes to explore and check out books. 

Music is a weekly class for all grades. For TK, kinder, and 1st grade, music instruction is provided by a third-party program. Music for 2nd and 3rd graders is provided by Living Jazz, with half the year focusing on percussion and the other half choral music. Music for 4th and 5th graders is instrument instruction provided by an OUSD teacher.

Glenview students use the garden in conjunction with our Art and Garden program led by Ms. T, as well as part of in-class science instruction.

We use digital citizenship lesson plans developed by Common Sense Media to address timely topics and prepare students to take ownership of their digital lives.

To ensure all students are reading at grade level, teachers refer students to work one-on-one or in small groups with instructors as needed.
