Annual Events

Glenview hosts many events throughout the year. Here is a high-level overview of events and the timeframe they happen in, which is subject to change.

Fall

Walk and Roll to School Day (October)
Join us to celebrate our health, the environment, and our school spirit. Walk, bike, or scooter to school with a walking school bus group or bike train. Take a turn on Glenview's Griffinator Bike Blender to pedal to a smoothie and participate in the school-wide chart to see how we get to Glenview. See the 2018 pics here.

Fall Carnival and Haunted House (October)
The Fall Carnival is one of Glenview’s most enjoyable and popular traditions. Kids and adults alike come dressed in fabulous costumes. There are creepy games to play, prizes to be won, faces to be painted, and delicious home-baked treats to be had! And don't miss the famous Haunted House. It is spooktacular!

*Fundraiser: Griffin Fund (September/October)*
This is a straight-up “please give us money” request. There will be a suggested amount per child, but we want everyone to feel completely comfortable with what they give, or not at all, so we will never pressure you. That being said, if you’re in the fortunate position to be able to give more than the suggested amount, then please do because many of our families are not able to give.

Winter

Holiday Sale (December)
Get your holiday shopping done early! The holiday craft fair brings families together with the surrounding community of Glenview and Dimond business owners and residents. Merchants and individuals can sell their wares in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Currently we partner with Edna Brewer Middle School, which hosts the event at their location.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratorical Fest (Winter)
Each class and individual students compete in the district-wide oratorical competition, starting at the school-wide level. Winners at Glenview go on to compete at the next-level competition. This is scheduled by OUSD.

Black History Month (February)
Several events take place during this special month at Glenview, including the Family STEAM Night where scientists share their hands-on activities with students.

Family STEAM Night (February)
Family STEAM Night is part of the Glenview celebration of Black History Month. It is fun-filled evening filled with tons of hands-on science and engineering activities. Don't miss this extraordinary event!

*Fundraiser: Read-a-thon (February/March)*
This is an event that has been going on for about 25 years at Glenview. The kids read as much as they can and ask grandparents, extended family, neighbors, and anyone who will listen to donate to Glenview to support their reading. The event ends in our “Day of Reading” with local authors reading to the kids.

Book Fair (February/March)
Glenview Elementary hosts a Book Fair to encourage reading and to bring books to the forefront for all our students. Our school also earns cash and vouchers for books or supplies for every item purchased. And our teachers receive many new books for their classrooms with generous gifts from Glenview families made through the Teacher Wish List at the Fair.

Spring

Science Fair (March or May)
Students and classes create experiments and document their findings, culminating in an award ceremony.

Disability Awareness Day (March/April)
Glenview has speakers come in and share their disability story with classes, we read books, and we also usually have an assembly of some sort, such as having the Axis Dance Company perform.

Spring event (April/May)
The spring event varies, from a night-time parent-only boozy fest to a day-time free carnival. Other years we’ve had raffles and online auctions. Ideas are welcome for this year!

Family Pride Event (May)
This day celebrates the diversity of our families at Glenview.

Throughout the Year

PTA Meetings
The PTA has general membership meetings five times a year, on the third Wednesday of August, October, January, March, and May. The Executive Board meetings are the first Wednesday of each month, and everyone is welcome to attend. Learn more about the PTA here.

Parent Coffees
On the first Friday of each month, parents gather after drop-off for a cup of free coffee and socializing.

Movie Nights
Three hours of cartoons and kid-friendly movies will give any work-weary parent a little boost for their weekend. Kids: bring a pillow and a blanket, stake out your spot on the floor, and munch away on hot dogs and popcorn. Yes, we do have some fruit and veggies too. Parents: make your dinner reservations, drop off the youngsters, leave a little donation, and enjoy your evening out. The Social Club will take care of things for a few hours.

Picnics in the Park
Meet up in Dimond Park for a picnic with your class or grade.

Camping Trips
Glenview has a very special tradition of grade-level camping trips. They take place in the fall or spring, depending on the organizer, and are often in nearby Chabot Park.
